Why get the bundle
- Time takes many looks at the clock. A bundle gives you hour, half-hour and quarter-hour sets, so each step builds on the last.
The problem
6:45 is a quarter to seven, not a quarter past six
Quarter hours bring new words and a tricky hour hand. At 6:45 the short hand is almost on 7, and children read it as 7.
Quarter past and quarter to
6:15 is a quarter past six and 6:45 is a quarter to seven. Children mix the two, or say both times the same way.
The hour hand near the next number
At 6:45 the short hand is close to 7. A child reads 7:45, although the hour has not changed yet.
Reading the minute hand as a number
The long hand on 3 means 15 minutes and on 9 means 45. Children say 3 or 9 because that is the number the hand points at.
Each card shows a quarter-hour time. Children read the hour hand first, then the minute hand on the 3 or 9, and write the time as digits.
