Why get the bundle
- Worksheets, cards, games and a deck let children see the idea in a few ways.
The problem
45 - 2: only the ones change
Taking a one-digit number from a two-digit number should feel easy. Children still start over or subtract from the wrong digit.
Counting back from the start
For 15 - 3, a child counts back from 15 by ones. Starting at 15 and taking three steps is the skill.
Changing the tens
In 45 - 2 the answer is 43. Children sometimes write 25 by subtracting from the tens.
Round tens
53 - 3 is 50. Children who see 50 as five tens and zero ones see why it works.
These problems take a one-digit number from a two-digit number with no regrouping. Children see that only the ones change, which prepares for column subtraction.
