Why get the bundle
- Cards, games and color-by-code give children many chances to borrow carefully and check.
The problem
94 - 58 is 36, not 44 or 46
Subtracting with borrowing is where many second graders get stuck. The smaller-from-larger shortcut gives plausible answers that are wrong.
Subtracting the smaller from the larger
In 94 - 58, a child does 8 - 4 for the ones and gets 4. The 4 is on top, so we must borrow.
Borrowing but not reducing
After taking a ten, the tens digit goes down by one. Leaving the 9 as 9 gives 46.
A zero in the ones place
50 - 36 has a zero in the ones place. A child cannot take 6 from 0 without borrowing.
The answer choices include the smaller-from-larger answer and the forgot-to-reduce answer. Children borrow when the top digit is too small, then add back to check.

Regrouping practice

Questions
Before you buy.
How can children check?
Add the answer to the number taken away. It should give the starting number.
Does every problem borrow?
Most do, so children learn to check each column.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PowerPoint file you can open in Google Slides.
Can I share it with my class?
Yes — one teacher can use it with their own students, this year and next. Sharing the file with other teachers needs a separate license.
Do I need Google Slides?
No. The file is a PowerPoint (.pptx). It opens in PowerPoint, and in Google Slides once you upload it to Google Drive.
