The problem
36 stickers plus 3 packs of 3: add the 3 and the 3?
A two-step problem hides a first question. Children grab the numbers they see and perform one operation, usually adding everything.
Adding every number
36 + 3 + 3 = 42. The story has 3 packs of 3, which is 9 stickers, so the total is 45.
Doing only the first step
A child finds that 3 packs of 3 is 9 and writes 9 as the answer, forgetting the 36 they started with.
Choosing the wrong operation
Words like 'buys' suggest adding, but 'packs of' signals multiplying first. Children read the numbers and skip the words.
Each problem has a hidden first step, such as finding the total in packs, and then a second step. Children name the first step before solving and check the answer against the story.
