Why get the bundle
- A bundle has sorts, cards and an assessment, so tense is something kids can name and check in their own work.
The problem
'We baked bread yesterday': past, present or future?
Second graders use tense in speech without naming it. Writing means deciding which time a sentence is about and keeping it steady.
Missing the time clue
'Yesterday' or 'tomorrow' tells the time. Children often skip it and just read the verb.
-ed means past, but not always
'Walked' and 'baked' end in -ed. Kids use this shortcut, which fails for irregular verbs.
Switching tense mid-story
In their own writing, children slip between 'went' and 'goes.' Naming the tense is the first step to fixing it.
Each sentence is sorted by tense. Children look for time clues and verb endings, such as yesterday and -ed, to decide.
