The problem
Sail, wait, train: 'when two vowels go walking' doesn't always work
Ai says long a and sits in the middle of words. Children who read a and i separately get 'sa-il' and miss the word.
Two sounds, not one
A child says /a/ /i/ for ai. The pair says one sound, long a, as in sail.
Ai or ay
Both say long a. Ai is in the middle of words, and ay ends them. Children spell by ear and guess.
The rhyme isn't reliable
'Two vowels go walking' fails for words like 'said' and 'again'. Children need to know it's a pattern, not a law.
Only ai words are included, such as sail, wait and train. Children see ai in the middle of words and learn it says long a.
