The problem
Street, free, speed: ee is the easy team, with one sound
Ee says long e every time. Children find it one of the easiest teams, but they can still confuse it with ea in spelling.
Ee or ea
Both say long e. Children write 'sleap' for sleep because they can't tell by ear.
Reading e, then e
A child says /e/ /e/. Ee is one long sound, not two short ones.
Blends
In 'street' and 'speed', ee follows a blend. Children read the blend, then lose the vowel.
Only ee words are included, such as street, free and speed. Children see ee in the middle and at the end of words and read it as long e.
