The problem
Might, flight, fight: three letters, one sound, and gh is silent
Igh is a three-letter vowel team that says long i. Children read the g and h, and the word breaks.
Sounding the gh
A child says 'mi-g-h-t'. In igh, the gh is silent and the i is long.
Igh or ie
Both can say long i. Igh often sits before t, and ie comes at the end of words like pie.
Blends
In 'flight' and 'fight', igh follows a blend or a letter. Children lose the vowel.
Only igh words are included, such as might, flight and fight. Children see igh before t again and again and learn to read it as long i.
