The problem
Crow, narrow, below: ow says long o here, and /ow/ in 'clown'
Ow has two sounds. Here it says long o, as in snow. Children who learned /ow/ in clown may read 'crow' as 'crowd'.
Two sounds, one spelling
Ow in 'crow' is long o, and in 'clown' it's /ow/. Children read one and apply it to the other.
Ow or oa
Both say long o. Ow ends words, and oa sits in the middle.
Narrow and below
In longer words like 'narrow' and 'below', ow is at the end of a syllable. Children read the first part and guess the rest.
Only ow words with long o are included, such as crow, narrow and below. Children see ow at the end of words and syllables.
