The problem
Sail, weak, street, might, boat: six teams, one long vowel idea
Vowel teams are two or three letters that make one vowel sound. Children who read letter by letter break them apart.
Reading each letter
A child reads /a/ /i/ for ai, or /o/ /a/ for oa. Teams make one sound.
Same sound, different spellings
Ai and ay say long a. Ee and ea say long e. Oa and ow say long o. Children must remember which spelling goes with which word.
Teams with more than one sound
Ea, oo and ow each have two sounds. Children must try one and test if the word makes sense.
Words with ai, ay, ea, ee, igh, oa, oo and ow are mixed. Children check the team and read it as one sound.
