The problem
-og, -op, -ot: short o families with a round mouth shape
Short o is often mixed up with short u or read as 'ah'. A family approach gives children a steady frame to hear it.
O or u?
Dog and dug, cop and cup, and hot and hut look alike. Children swap vowels if they read quickly.
Accent drift
In some accents, short o sounds like /ah/. That can make it unclear whether the page is wrong or the child is.
Guessing from the picture
Cog, dog and bog invite picture guessing. Children say 'puppy' for dog unless they read every letter.
Only short o words, grouped by ending. Children see -og, -op and -ot over and over, so the open /o/ sound is steady.
