Why get the bundle
- -an works best with repeat practice. The bundle adds extra formats and an assessment so the ending stays secure.
The problem
Can, fan, man: the n changes how short a sounds
Short a before n comes out nasal, so 'can' sounds like 'cehn' in some accents. Children hear one thing and see another.
Nasal short a
The /n/ pulls the a sound nasal. Children who learned clear short a can feel unsure when it sounds different.
an vs. am
Can and cam, man and mam. M and n differ by one hump, which beginners overlook.
'An' is already a word
Children may know 'an' as a sight word and think the family is only about that word.
All the words end in -an, like can, fan and man. Children get the n sound in the same place, many times, until it blends smoothly.

Read -an words
Blend the -an ending with new first letters to read words.
- can — the -an family
- fan — the -an family
- man — the -an family
- pan — the -an family
- ran — the -an family
- tan — the -an family
- van — the -an family

Who it’s for
Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.
Parents & homeschool
Say 'an, an, can, fan, man' as a chant. The rhythm helps the nasal sound settle.
Teachers
Use as a short a family center, after -at and -ap.
Early readers
Good for children who confuse n and m at the end of words.

Questions
Before you buy.
Why does 'can' sound different?
The /n/ makes the a nasal. It's normal. Keep modeling the word and asking children to look at the letters.
Is this useful for spelling?
Yes. Children who read -an as a chunk can spell it as one, which helps with can, ran and van.
How do I get the file?
The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 12 pages. No account needed.
Can I print it more than once?
Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.
Will it print in color?
The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.
