The problem
Bat, cat, hat: the first family most children read
-at is often the first chunk children learn. It's the model for every other family, so it needs to be solid.
Dropped final t
The /t/ is a quick tap. Children say 'ca' for cat or add an extra vowel: 'cat-uh'.
Cat or cut?
Beginners swap vowels and read 'cat' as 'cut'. -at keeps the vowel fixed so children see short a clearly.
Letter by letter
Many children sound out c-a-t each time. -at as a unit speeds reading.
Words end in -at only: bat, cat, hat and more. Children read the chunk once and then change just the first letter, which makes reading feel fast.
