Why get the bundle
- -ed pairs with -en and -et. The bundle includes all the formats so children read e families more than once, and an assessment checks what's held.
The problem
Bed, fed, led: e looks like a, and b looks like d
-ed is a double trap. The vowel e can read as a, and the b in bed can read as d.
Bed or bad?
Children swap short e and short a, reading 'bed' as 'bad'. The words look close and both are real.
b and d
'Bed' starts with b and ends with d. The same two letters in a different order is a reversal trap.
Ed as a past ending
Children who know -ed for past tense, like 'jumped', may be unsure why bed ends in /ed/.
Only -ed words are included: bed, fed, led and others. Children read the ending as one unit and compare it to the first letter.

Why does -ed sound different from past tense -ed?
Here -ed is part of the word, as in bed. Past tense -ed shows up later. The page uses the first kind.
My child reads 'bed' as 'bad'. Will this help?
It gives repeated short e words. Say 'eh' with a relaxed mouth and ask them to check the middle letter.
