The problem

Hen, den, men: -en gets mixed with -in, and pen with pin

In many accents, short e before n sounds like short i. Children hear 'pin' when they see 'pen'.

pen and pin

Many children say the same word for both. Reading the letter, not the sound, is the key.

en vs. an

Hen and han, men and man. A child who guesses the vowel can read the wrong word.

Ten, men, then

Words like 'then' and 'when' have -en but with extra letters. Beginners can mix them up.

All words end in -en, like hen, den and men. The e vowel is fixed, so children see the ending many times and can compare with -in later.

Who it’s for

Built for the kitchen table and the classroom.

Parents & homeschool

Say 'pen' and 'pin' side by side. Ask: what's different? Then look at the letter.

Teachers

Use as a short e center, or to pair with the -in family for contrast.

Accent & dialect

Helps children whose e and i sound the same to rely on letters.

Questions

Before you buy.

Why is -en confused with -in?

In many accents, short e and i sound alike before n. Reading the letter is how children tell them apart.

Should I teach -en and -in together?

Teach -en first, then -in. When both are secure, compare them to practice the difference.

How do I get the file?

The download link appears right after checkout and lands in your inbox at the same time. One PDF with 7 pages. No account needed.

Can I print it more than once?

Yes. One teacher or one household can print unlimited copies for their own students, this year and next.

Will it print in color?

The pages are designed to print in black and white, so they print clean on any home or school printer and do not eat a cartridge.

What if it isn’t right for us?

Email support@pencillane.com within 30 days and we refund the full $3.50. No form, no questions.
