The problem
Bin, fin, pin: -in is a small word and a big family
'In' is already a sight word, so children may think -in is just that. They need to see it as an ending that makes new words.
pin and pen
In many accents, i and e sound alike before n. Children read 'pin' as 'pen' if they trust the sound.
bin, ban, bun
One vowel change and the word is different. Children who skip the vowel get the word wrong.
In as a sight word
Children may see 'in' and stop, not noticing that b-in is a new word.
Only -in words are included, such as bin, fin and pin. Children see the ending repeated and learn to read the vowel and the final n.
