The problem
Bit, fit, hit: it's easy to read 'bit' as 'bite'
Children who know silent e may add one. Others say 'bit' with a long i, because they know the letter name.
Bit vs. bite
With no e, bit has a short i. Children who've seen silent e may add the e sound by habit.
Sit and sat
Children swap short i with short a, reading 'sit' as 'sat'.
Quick t
The /t/ at the end is quick. Children may drop it and read 'bi' for bit.
