The problem
Bun, fun, pun: u and n are upside-down twins
In -un, the vowel and the final letter are mirror images. Children often flip them or read them as 'an'.
u and n
U upside down is n. Children can read 'bun' as 'bnu' or lose track of which is the vowel.
Bun, ban, bin
Three vowels, three words. Children who skip the vowel read the wrong one.
Sun or son
Sun has a short u sound but a different spelling than 'son'. Children may mix them.
Only -un words appear, like bun, fun and pun. The ending is fixed, so children can focus on the first letter and the u/n pattern.
