Why get the bundle

The problem
But, cut, gut: why 'put' doesn't rhyme with 'cut'
-ut seems simple, but 'put' breaks the rule. Children who learn the family may read 'put' as 'putt', and need to know it's different.
Put is the exception
Put looks like -ut but says /oo/. Children who trust the family read it wrong.
But vs. bit
Beginners swap short u and short i, reading 'but' as 'bit'.
Final t
The /t/ ends quickly. Children may skip it and read 'bu' for but.
Only regular -ut words appear, like but, cut and gut. Children read the chunk confidently, and 'put' can be taught as a special word.
