The problem
Zoe has 15 pencils and gives away 1
In a take-away story, the number we start with comes first, and the bigger number is not always the answer. Children grab both numbers and add.
Adding the two numbers
Zoe has 15 and gives away 1, so a child writes 16. Gives away means fewer.
Starting from the wrong number
Some start from the number given away and count up. The story begins with the larger group.
Counting back too far
For 17 - 7 children count back seven steps. Seeing that 7 is a part of 17 gets there faster.
Each problem is a short take-away story with a 'how many left' question. Children picture the group, cross out what leaves, write the number sentence and answer.
