Counting every number from one
Children begin by counting everything. Moving to counting on, then to recall, is the real work in this set.
Count-all every time
To solve 5 + 2, many children count 1 to 5, then keep going. It works, but it is slow and easy to miscount.
Not knowing what plus means
Plus is joining. Children who only see two numbers and a symbol may write one of them as the answer.
Adding zero and one
The 0 and 1 facts seem easy yet cause errors, such as 6 + 0 answered as 0 or 7 when the child guesses.
Small sums to 10 keep every answer countable. Children start with the bigger number and count on, which moves them from counting all toward quick recall.
