The problem
First grade phonics: blends, digraphs and the silent e
First graders move from CVC words to longer words with blends, digraphs and silent e. A letter can be silent, two letters can make one sound.
Inserting a vowel in blends
Children say 'buh-lack' for black. Blends like bl, cr and st must be said as one smooth sound.
Digraphs are two letters, one sound
Sh, ch, th and wh don't sound like their letters. Children try to sound each out and get stuck.
The silent e
'Cap' becomes 'cape' with one extra letter. The e has no sound but changes the vowel.
