The problem
Vowel teams and blends that won't stick
In 1st and 2nd grade children meet patterns where two letters make one sound, and many keep reading them letter by letter.
Blends get broken apart
Children often add a vowel inside a blend, reading 'black' as 'buh-lack'. Blends need practice as one unit.
Two letters, one sound
Digraphs, vowel teams and r-controlled vowels look like two sounds on the page. Children need many words with the same team.
Too many teams to track
ai, ay, ea, ee, igh, oa, oo, ow, ar, er, ir, or, ur: each needs its own practice set.
