Is this A or a? Preschoolers see two letters as two different things
Children often learn capitals and lowercase as two separate sets. They need to see they are one letter in two shapes.
Same letter, two shapes
A and a share almost nothing visually. Children meet them as different symbols before they learn they are the same.
Look-alikes
c, o, s, v, w, x and z look nearly the same in both cases. Children have to rely on size, not shape.
Name, not size
Children often say 'big A' and 'little a', but the terms capital and lowercase take time to stick.
