The problem
Grade 1-2 phonics: vowel teams and r-controlled vowels
Many English words have vowels that do not follow short or long rules. Teams like ai and ea and bossy r change sounds, and spelling choices vary.
Two vowels, one sound
In 'rain' the a and i make one long a. Children try to sound out both and end up lost.
Same sound, different spelling
ai, ay and a-e can all say long a. Children pick the spelling that fits the word position.
Bossy r
Ar, er, ir, or and ur change the vowel. Er, ir and ur sound alike, which makes spelling hard.
