The problem
CVC words: the stretch from sounding out letters to reading words
Late kindergarten and first grade children can say each letter sound but struggle to blend them. Short vowels sound alike, and word families offer a shortcut.
Short vowels blend together
Children confuse short e and short i, reading 'pen' as 'pin.' Each vowel needs its own practice.
Blending each sound
c-a-t becomes 'c... a... t' and not 'cat.' Children need many words to make blending smooth.
Word families as a shortcut
Once a child knows -at, they can read cat, hat and sat. It is a faster path for reluctant readers.
