The problem
Second grade phonics: diphthongs and the next set of sight words
Diphthongs like oi and ou glide between two vowel sounds. Spellings such as ow and ou or oi and oy look different but sound the same.
Sounds that glide
Oi and ou start in one place and end in another. Children try to say one steady vowel.
Choosing the spelling
Oy comes at the end of a word, oi in the middle. Aw and au, ow and ou follow similar patterns.
